3, 4 or 7 Days? Choosing Your San Carlos Trip

“How many days should I come for?” is one of the first questions people ask us, and it’s a good one. There’s no single right answer — it depends on your time, your budget, how far you’re travelling and what you want out of the trip. But we can walk you through the trade-offs honestly, so you can pick the length that actually fits you.

Here’s how to think about a 3-, 4- or 7-day San Carlos trip, and who each one suits best.

The basic trade-off

It’s simple at heart: more days means more diving, more variety, and a more relaxed pace. Fewer days means a tighter, more focused trip that’s easier on your calendar and your wallet. Neither is “better” — a well-chosen short trip beats a long one you couldn’t really spare the time for. The goal is matching the length to your situation.

One thing worth weighing early: how far you’re coming. If you’re driving down from Arizona or crossing the border, the travel is a bigger share of a short trip than a long one, so a few extra dive days can make the journey feel much more worth it. If San Carlos is an easy hop for you, a short trip makes perfect sense.

The 3-day trip: a focused taste

A shorter trip is about hitting the highlights without a big time commitment. It’s ideal if you’re tight on days off, testing the waters on your first visit, or fitting diving around a longer trip or a weekend. You’ll get in the water, experience what makes the Sea of Cortez special, and get a real feel for the place — just with less room to spread out across lots of different sites.

Think of it as the espresso version: short, focused, and genuinely satisfying. Plenty of divers do a 3-day trip, fall for San Carlos, and come back for longer. You can see what’s involved on our 3-day trip page.

The 4-day trip: the sweet spot for many

Adding a day changes the feel more than you’d expect. A 4-day trip gives you a bit more breathing room — more dives, more variety across sites, and a pace that feels less like a dash. It’s often the sweet spot for divers who want a proper trip without committing a full week, and it leaves margin so a single weather day doesn’t derail everything.

If you’re not sure between short and long, the 4-day trip is a very easy one to recommend. It’s enough to relax into the rhythm of a dive trip while still being manageable to plan around.

A week is where San Carlos really opens up. With seven days you’ve got the time to dive a genuine variety of sites, come back to favourites, and settle into that unhurried, one-dive-flows-into-the-next pace that makes a dive holiday feel like a proper escape. It’s the best fit for keen divers, underwater photographers who want time to work their subjects, and anyone travelling a long way who wants the trip to justify the journey.

A week also gives you flexibility. Weather, conditions and what the marine life is doing can shift day to day, and a longer stay means you can pick the best days rather than being locked into a narrow window. Take a look at the 7-day trip if you want the full Sea of Cortez experience.

A few other things to weigh

Beyond time and distance, think about your experience and goals. Newer divers sometimes prefer a shorter first trip to build confidence, then return for longer. Photographers and enthusiasts almost always wish they’d booked more days. And if you’re coming as a group, a longer trip gives everyone room to dive at their own pace and still have downtime together.

Budget matters too, of course, and being honest with yourself about the days you can genuinely take off matters most of all. The best trip is the one you can actually relax on.

Not sure? Ask us

If you’re still torn, tell us how much time you have, where you’re travelling from and what you most want to see, and we’ll give you an honest recommendation. Whatever you choose, you’ll be diving the world’s aquarium. That’s a good trip at any length.
