Earning Your Advanced Certification in San Carlos

Your open water card gets you in the water. It’s the next few certifications that really open the ocean up — deeper sites, night dives, better buoyancy, navigation you can actually trust. And here’s a thought most divers never have: you don’t have to earn those in a cold quarry at home. You can level up your diving in the warm, clear, wildlife-rich water of the Sea of Cortez.

Level up where the water is warm and clear — training in the Sea of Cortez.

Here’s why San Carlos is a brilliant place to earn your Advanced certification or a specialty, what you might work on, and how to fold training into a dive trip.

Why advance your training at all?

Plenty of divers stop at their entry-level card and never go further, and they miss a lot. Continuing your training isn’t about collecting cards — it’s about becoming a genuinely better, more confident, safer diver with access to more of the underwater world. Advanced training typically opens up greater depth, introduces you to specialties like night diving and navigation, and — most valuably — sharpens the core skills that make every dive easier: buoyancy, trim, air consumption, awareness.

The jump in comfort and capability between a brand-new diver and one with a bit more training under their belt is enormous. And it happens fastest when you’re diving a lot, in good conditions, with good guidance — which is exactly what a San Carlos trip offers.

Advanced training isn’t about collecting cards. It’s about becoming a diver who’s comfortable, capable and safe — with access to far more of the ocean.

Why San Carlos is a great classroom

The environment you train in shapes how much you get out of it, and the Sea of Cortez is a wonderful place to learn. The water is warm and, for much of the year, beautifully clear, which takes the stress out of new skills — it’s a lot easier to focus on your buoyancy or your navigation when you can see, and you’re comfortable. And the diving is varied enough to support real training: deeper sites, the sea lion rookery, purpose-sunk wrecks on the SAAS reef, rich reefs for honing buoyancy. You’re not practising skills over a dull training platform — you’re applying them on genuinely spectacular dives.

There’s a motivational side too. Working on your navigation while rays glide past, or nailing your buoyancy among the reef life, makes the learning stick in a way a grey quarry never will.

What you might work on

Advanced-level training and specialties cover a range of skills, and the exact mix depends on the path you choose and what you want from your diving. Common ground includes a deeper dive to extend your range, underwater navigation so you can find your way with confidence, and improving the buoyancy and trim that underpin everything. From there, specialties branch out — night diving, wreck diving, photography, and more — and San Carlos’s variety means there’s a natural home here for a lot of them.

Make it a trip, not a chore

The beauty of advancing your certification on a dive trip is that it never feels like homework. You’re on holiday, you’re diving every day, and the skills come naturally as part of that. A few days in San Carlos can take you from a tentative newer diver to a noticeably more capable one — and you come home with both a new certification and a trip you’ll remember.

It’s also efficient. Rather than squeezing training dives into weekends at home over months, you knock out a concentrated, enjoyable block of learning in warm water, all at once.
