Seasonal Dive Gear Guide for San Carlos

You’ve booked your trip to San Carlos, and the excitement is building. You’re dreaming of playful sea lions, vast artificial reefs, and the stunning biodiversity of the Sea of Cortez. Now comes the practical part: packing. And when it comes to a dive trip, packing your gear is the most important step of all.

One of the biggest misconceptions about diving in Mexico is that the water is always bathwater-warm. The Sea of Cortez is a dynamic body of water with significant temperature swings throughout the year. Showing up with the wrong exposure suit can be the difference between the dive trip of a lifetime and a cold, uncomfortable experience.

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. This is your definitive seasonal guide to packing the perfect diver’s suitcase for San Carlos.

The Two “Seasons” of the Sea of Cortez

To keep it simple, you can think of the year in two main parts:

  • The Cool Season (roughly December – May): Characterized by cooler, nutrient-rich water that attracts specific marine life.
  • The Warm Season (roughly June – November): When the water warms up significantly, visibility is often at its peak, and different animals arrive.

A Detailed, Season-by-Season Gear Guide

WINTER (December – February)

Conditions: This is our coolest season. The air temperature is pleasant and mild, but the water dips to its lowest point. Expect water temperatures in the range of 62-68°F (17-20°C). While chilly, the water is often rich in nutrients.

What to Pack:

  • Wetsuit: A 5mm or 7mm full wetsuit is highly recommended. For those who get cold easily, layering with a hooded vest is an excellent idea.
  • Hood & Gloves: A hood is essential for staying warm and comfortable on your dives. A pair of 3mm gloves can also make a big difference.
  • Topside: Bring a warm jacket or fleece for the boat rides and surface intervals.
SPRING (March – May)

Conditions: The water is on a steady warming trend, and the visibility often starts to improve dramatically. This is a fantastic time to visit. Water temperatures will typically be between 68-75°F (20-24°C).

What to Pack:

  • Wetsuit: A 5mm full wetsuit is the perfect choice for most divers during this period. Some divers who run warm might be comfortable in a 3mm towards the end of May.
  • Hood: It’s still a great idea to pack a hood or hooded vest, especially for deeper dives or if you’re planning multiple dives in a day.
  • Topside: A windbreaker or light jacket is perfect for the boat.
SUMMER (June – August)

Conditions: The heat arrives! Air temperatures are hot, and the water follows suit, becoming very warm and pleasant. Water temperatures climb into the 78-85°F (26-29°C) range.

What to Pack:

  • Wetsuit: A 3mm full wetsuit is ideal. It provides enough thermal protection for longer dives without being too hot. Some divers may even be comfortable in a shorty, but a full suit offers better protection from scrapes and sun.
  • Topside: You won’t need much more than your swimsuit and a rash guard for sun protection.

Conditions: This is widely considered the “golden season” for diving in San Carlos. The water is at its warmest, the seas are often glassy calm, and visibility can be spectacular. This is peak season. Expect water temperatures of 80-86°F (27-30°C).

What to Pack:

  • Wetsuit: A 3mm full wetsuit is perfect. Even though the water is very warm, a full suit is recommended for multiple dives and sun protection.
  • Topside: It’s all about sun protection—hats, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen.

The Essentials for Every Season

No matter when you visit, these items should always be in your dive bag:

  • Dive Computer: The most important piece of safety gear you own.
  • Surface Marker Buoy (SMB): An essential piece of safety equipment for all boat dives.
  • Dive Light/Torch: Don’t reserve it just for night dives! A torch is crucial for looking under ledges and into crevices, and it magically restores the true, vibrant colors of the reef that are lost at depth.
  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Protecting your skin and our reefs is paramount.
  • Your Certification Cards & Logbook.

Packing correctly is the first step to an incredible dive vacation. By matching your gear to the season, you guarantee comfort, safety, and the ability to fully enjoy the underwater wonders of San Carlos.
