Sistema Arrecifal Artificial Sonorense (SAAS)
The Sistema Arrecifal Artificial Sonorense (SAAS) is an artificial reef project located in San Carlos, Mexico, designed to enhance marine biodiversity and support local fisheries. The initiative aims to create structured habitats for marine life by deploying various materials to form reefs. These artificial reefs serve as a breeding ground for fish and other marine organisms, helping to replenish and sustain their populations while bringing divers to explore the underwater structures.
The project not only helps improve the ecological balance of the area but also promotes eco-tourism by providing attractive diving and snorkeling sites for divers of all levels from entry level SCUBA divers to the most advanced technical divers there is something for everyone in San Carlos. The SAAS is part of broader efforts to protect marine environments and promote sustainable practices, benefiting both the ecosystem and the local community economically.
Developed with the collaboration of government entities, environmental organizations, and local stakeholders, the project reflects a commitment to conservation and sustainable use of marine resources in the Sea of Cortez.
